We Are Glued To Our Phones

We are in the era of a communications revolution. Distances have shrunk and life has become faster. The mobile phone is the ubiquitous symbol of this revolution. I have one, she has one, and he has one. Everyone has one! The vegetable vendor has one and he can talk to the hi- flying corporate type who has one!

Then there are the kinds of phones. There is one type that plays music and records the latest hits and plays tunes as ring tones. There are ones with a camera - click at what you want, wherever you want. Share pics with whomever you want. There are colored ones that cost a lot - and black and whites that are cheaper. Some keep track of cricket and football scores, some give the news of the day. The latest ones can help you check your e-mail.

In fact there is a mobile phone for almost everything. Do you remember the days when the only way you could phone was either at home or in a call box? We never felt the need to be in constant contact with other people. We were happy to use the phone for organized social chats or emergencies. Now, we have become more spontaneous calling people when we are in the store, at the bus stop or in the office. And the people that receive these impromptu calls are equally in odd places even the bathroom.

The revolution in communication has made us more reliant and vulnerable. As we leave the house for our next appointment, we feel undressed without our phone.
